Founded the same year as Granada, Leon was moved to its present location in 1610. You can still visit the ruins of Leon Viejo some 30 kilometers from the main city. Leon is known for it many impressive churches (including the largest cathedral in Central America) and its many universities. Despite its age, Leon has a modern progressive personality while maintaining a strong sense of community and revolutionary consciousness that can be seen in many murals and other public art. Leon is a 30 minute bus ride from the pacific coast and is surrounded by beautiful lakes, rivers, countryside, and volcanic mountains.
"LSLS's" hospitable family homestays are clean and comfortable, and all are walking distance from the school.
The school's afternoon activities in and around Leon include visits to markets, museums, historical sites, making contact with local people, culturally oriented mini-cursos, exploratory hikes and day trips to nearby beaches, and much more.
Visits and informal volunteer work with local service organizations, small businesses, and industrial cooperatives are available through the school. There are also weekend excursions to hike volcanoes, trips to other cities and pueblos in the northern area of Nicaragua, horseback excursions, and much more!. You can also join our Volunteer Nicaragua program.
Our Nicaragua tours are convenient ways to get in touch with nature and local people.
